World's Largest Crochet Blanket

Venessa Booysen from Fanie Booysen Estates was one of the ladies of the Hatfield Christian Church in Pretoria who made a very courageous attempt and got in the Guinness Book of World Records by making the world's largest crochet blanket!! 

The minimum requirement for this record attempt is 285.794 square metres. Our blanket measured 557.343 square metres. We have succeeded in breaking the record.

The ladies had to crochet individual squares and then crochet it together to make a bigger block of 35 squares.  All the bigger blocks are then put together to create one big blanket to be the largest crochet blanket ever made!

Everyone sat wherever they found a place and started.  They didn't mind spending hours and hours for several nights to come and sit in the cold church hall to put the blanket together.  Believe me these ladies can crochet like you have never seen before!!

 
 

Ingrid said the idea started at a meeting where one of the leaders said they need to collect blankets for the needy as it was going to be a very cold winter this year.  Another said why don't they ask the ladies to crochet blankets. And then they got to this great idea - why don't they put all the individual blankets together to create the World's Largest Crochet Blanket!!

And so they got the idea going . . . .

As winter was only a few weeks away they had to get started quickly.

 

All the blankets had different colours.  Not two blankets were the same.

The statistics on this blanket are very interesting.

It took 15 weeks to create.
The blanket is 557.343 square meters in size.
Total of 361 individual blankets.
It consists of 12 635 squares.
3 610 balls of wool used.
The weight is 332.12kg
It took 947 625 rows of knitting.
A total of 38million stitches.
The time was 45 thousand hours.
Total cost is R61,370.00 (South African Rands).

A special blanket was made in the design of the South African flag and was put in the middle.

Every individual blanket got a special patch with this wonderful message:

Jesus loves you - from all the ladies of the Hatfield Christian Church - John 3:16.



 

There was more than enough room to be creative.  These ladies have done an awesome project for a good cause.

And the end result is . . . an enormous crochet blanket  . . .

. . . . .  and a place in the Guinness Book of World Records!!

The final product was displayed in church on the Sunday.  What a display!
