GARDEN TIPS . . .
No 53: If you welcome birds or bats into your garden they will act as a natural way to get rid of insects that tend to attack your plants. You can also try tricks such as plants that deter certain pests from attacking other plants nearby (known as companionship planting).
No 52: Dogs that keep on chewing the irrigation heads- mix vaciline and pepper and cover the head. Please make sure that there is a big bowl of water for the pet to wash the burn off.
No 51: Ground cover like wonder lawn is an excellent way to soften the hard look of paving or stepping blocks in a garden. It needs very little soil to grow in and looks beautiful.
No 50: When planting bulbs in the garden, plant the bulb in a hole that is twice as deep as the height of the bulb.
No 49: An ordinary pond in your garden does not need to be deeper than 30cm. However, if you want to plant water lillies in it it must be at least 60cm deep.
No 48: Flies can be a nuisance when you want to lie next to the swimming pool. A natural way to keep flies away is to plant basilicum in the flower beds nearby and you get different colours of this herb as well.
No 47: When starting seedlings or propagating cuttings, don't buy pots, make your own, quickly and inexpensively! Use newspaper to roll your own pot plant. When it's time to plant the seedlings or cuttings, simply place the entire pot in the ground. The newspaper will break down in a couple of months and become part of the soil.
No 46: Bird baths are an essential component of any bird-friendly garden. These should have a rim on which birds feel secure or be shallow enough for them to bath in. Place a stone as a perch in those which have steep sides.
No 45: Avoid using pesticides in the garden as these have an adverse effect on the bird life.
No 44: Gravel is becoming more and more popular for paths, but it is definitely not good for small bare feet.
No 42: Pour hot boiling water on difficult weeds between paving and walls. Overseas they are even using a blow torch!
No 40: Don't do anything to make your garden look too gaudy. The most common example is putting in a swimming pool that takes up the entire back yard
No 38: Small changes can make all the difference, like weeding, sweeping the leaves and edging the lawn.
No 37: Om slaai te help om 'n goeie kop te vorm, knyp tuiniers dikwels die blare toe met 'n wasgoedpennetjie as die plant nog klein is.
No 36: Potential buyers who see homes with high-maintenance gardens might be put off by the amount of work that is necessary to maintain such a landscape.
No 34: Landscape appropriately if your property's yard is not level or has an irregular plot shape. Properties that are level and have a distinct square or rectangular lot shape are more desirable from a resale perspective.
No 32: Keep your garden simple, like planting plants that don't require a lot of attention and need minimal maintenance.
No 31: Baie kruie is uitstekende natuurlike afweermiddels teen verskeie insekte in die tuin. Uiegras in 'n roosbedding sal vir sekere plantluise verdryf.
No 30: If your neighbour's home overlooks your garden, think about what kinds of plants could add privacy.
No 28: A well-maintained, good sized garden can add between 10 and 15 percent to the value of your house. People often decide whether they like a property or not in the first few moments - possibly even before they have reached your front door. A garden plays a vital role to adding value.
No 26: One of the most important areas of a home is the front door. A few flower-filled tubs, pots, a landscaped water feature or a hanging basket can add colour and make a home welcoming and appear cared for.
No 24: Most gardeners would like to have a borehole due to our unpredictable rainfall. Before sinking a borehole, find out if you need permission from the local authority to do so. Also check that you will not be drilling near underground electrical cables, sewage or water pipes.
No 22: Before applying mulch, hoe the ground lightly to improve ventilation. For general use, mulches should be spread 50 - 75mm thick. Never rake, turn over, dig in or disturb mulches in any way. Doing so will damage the fine feeder roots which plants develop in the zone between the mulch and the soil.
Besoek jou naaste hardeware winkel of kwekery.
No 20: The best time to plant grass seed is in autumn and spring when the cool temperature aids germination.
No 18: Get some birds back to your garden by putting a birdfeeder in a tree. You will have less problems with insects and pests.
No 15: When creating a stone garden, first pave the area where you want the little stones, and arrange the small stones on the paving, it will prevent the stones from being covered with sand during heavy rains and make it easier to maintain.
No 14: Moet nooit gebreekte kleipotte weggooi nie.
No 13: Study the climate of your area and the conditions of your garden. Identify shady and sunny spots as this will influence your choice of plants.
No 11: Introduce indigenous plants to entice local insects. Select plants which are rich in pollen and nectar and produce fruits and berries for insects and birds.
No 10: Moenie rubberbome in jou tuin plant nie.
No 9: Buy a water timer to save water. It is a sure way of never forgetting to turn the water off.
No 7: Protect newly-planted seedlings from snails by putting snail bait out under a cabbage leaf or sprinkle tobacco dust, crushed egg shells or sawdust around plants.
No 5: Cover exposed compost heaps to keep them dry during the wet rain season.
No 3: Plants must fit in with the size of the garden.
No 1: Never buy a plant and then try and find a place for it. You are sure to plant it in the wrong place and then wonder why it is not growing well.
